Lisa KolelszarWhen people ask me how long I have been drawing and painting I tell them “all of my life”.  Some of my earliest memories revolve around art.

I grew up in Buffalo, New York and graduated in 1987 from the State University of New York at Geneseo with a dual major in English Literature and Art Studio.  My concentration in my art degree was textiles but I have not pursued that medium since college.  Since graduating from college, I have had the opportunity to study under many different artists.  I have taken classes at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo, NY), Maryland College of Art & Design (Wheaton, MD), the Art League located at the Torpedo Factory (Alexandria, VA), the Art Studio (Williamsburg, VA), Peninsula Fine Arts Center (Newport News, VA) and the Charles Taylor Arts Center (Hampton, VA).  Most of the classes I took have been watercolor classes and I exclusively painted in watercolor for many years.

About 5 years ago after the birth of my first child, I decided that I wanted to take classes again but explore a different medium.  I signed up for an acrylic painting class at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center with James Warwick Jones as the instructor.  I have been a regular class participant since that time.

Learning acrylic painting has opened up a new world for me in exploring art.  Calling painting my hobby does not seem enough for me for I acquire a great deal of personal satisfaction when I paint.  Just recently I started to exhibit and sell my work.

Most of my paintings involve outdoor scenes that I have photographed.  I am an avid gardener and use many of the flowers from my own garden as painting subjects.  I enjoy hiking, running and spending time outdoors with my family and dogs.

I enjoy painting portraits of family pets and try to the make the painting the closest resemblance possible to the customer’s pet.  I spend a lot of time on the eyes of the animal for I feel that is what sets it apart from any other dog or cat.

I currently live in Williamsburg, Virginia with my husband, three young children, one dogs, two guinea pigs, frog and fish.  The name of “Barking Dog Studio” was conceived many years ago when we were trying to find an appropriate name for my studio.  The window next to my easel looks over our back porch where many nights (and days) will find one (or two) of our dogs barking at the moon.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you enjoy my gallery!
